A few days before the lock-down that paralysed the world with Covid-19, we managed to make a small trip to discover the UK anyway.
Starting from London, we planned to visit the South West part of the United Kingdom, crossing the counties of Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, and passing through the county of Somerset returning home.
Our first destination was Portsmouth, a port city located in the county of Hampshire; I had already been there in the past (click here to see the post), but after 5 years I was happy to come back because this city has always been one of my favourites here in the UK.
Probably one of the main attractions of Portsmouth is the Spinnaker Tower, a bit the symbol of the city…
This time, given the low turnout of tourists due to pre-Covid-19 alert, we decided to climb up to admire the view…
The view of the Historic Dockyard is beautiful, another must-see attraction in Portsmouth…
Another thing to do if you are in the city, is a nice walk to the Southsea area, from where you can admire the city from afar by walking along the coast…
Once in the Southsea area do not forget to visit the castle, which is always free to enter…
Once we visited Portsmouth, we headed to the county of Dorset, where we made a short stop in Sandbanks…
Unfortunately the weather did not assist us much, so we decided to continue towards Plymouth, another very nice city in the county of Devon, also visited by me more than 5 years ago…
One of the things that has fascinated me the most since my first visit here was the Smeaton’s Tower in the Hoe Park area…
After Plymouth we then moved on to Cornwall, to discover this wild land; our first stop was at St Michael Mount…
Unfortunately, even here we have not been very lucky with the tide, which did not allow us to reach the island, but it is still a place worth visiting, even for a simple shot.
Soon after we headed to the coast’s edge of Cornwall, known as Land’s end…
Here the landscape is truly characteristic, the coasts are jagged and overhanging the sea; you can see the influence of the ocean on the Cornish peninsula, where strong currents continue to erode the coast…
Going back to the West coast, we then made a stop also in the Newquay area, where considering the weather conditions, typical of this time of year, we managed to capture some other panoramic shots…
From here we continue on our journey to Bath, a well-known spa resort in the county of Somerset; this takes its name from the ancient Roman baths and its spas are the only natural spas in the United Kingdom.
If you want advice on where to stay in Bath, we have booked an AirB&B through the Haringtons Hotel, located in the heart of the city and with a private hot tub…
After this very pleasant experience, the time has come to return to London, unaware that months of lock-down awaited us…

Pochi giorni prima del lockdown che ha paralizzato il mondo con il Covid-19, siamo riusciti a fare lo stesso un piccolo viaggio alla scoperta del Regno Unito.
Partendo da Londra, eravamo intenzionati a visitare la parte Sud-Ovest del Regno Unito, attraversando le contee dell’Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, spingendoci fino in Cornovaglia, e ripassando nella contea del Somerset ritornando verso casa.
La nostra prima meta era Portsmouth, città portuale situata nella contea dell’Hampshire; ero già stato qui in passato (clicca qui per vedere il post), ma a distanza di 5 anni sono tornato molto volentieri perché questa città è sempre stata una delle mie preferite qui nel Regno Unito.
Probabilmente una delle principali attrazioni di Portsmouth è la Spinnaker Tower, un po’ il simbolo della città…
Questa volta, vista la scarsa affluenza di turisti causa pre-Covid-19 allerta, abbiamo deciso di salire fino su per ammirare il panorama…
Bellissima la visuale sull’Historic Dockyard, altra attrazione di Portsmouth assolutamente da visitare.
Un’altra cosa da fare se siete in città, è una bella passeggiata fino alla zona di Southsea, da dove potrete ammirare la città da lontano camminando lungo la costa…
Una volta nella zona di Southsea non dimenticate di visitare il castello, il cui ingresso è sempre gratuito…
Una volta visitata Portsmouth, ci siamo diretti verso la contea del Dorset, dove abbiamo fatto una breve sosta a Sandbanks…
Sfortunatamente il meteo non ci ha assistito molto, così abbiamo deciso di proseguire verso Plymouth, altra città molto carina nella contea di Devon, anche questa da me visitata più di 5 anni fa…

Dopo Plymouth ci siamo quindi inoltrati nella Cornovaglia, alla scoperta di questa terra selvaggia; la nostra prima sosta é stata a St Michael Mount…
Sfortunatamente anche qui non siamo stati molto fortunati con la marea, che non ci ha permesso di raggiungere l’isolotto, ma è comunque un posto che è valso la pena visitare, anche per un semplice scatto.
Subito dopo ci siamo diretti sulla punta estrema della Cornovaglia, conosciuta come Land’s end…
Qui il paesaggio è davvero caratteristico, le coste sono frastagliate e a strapiombo sul mare; si nota l’influenza che l’oceano ha sulla penisola della Cornovaglia, dove le correnti forti continuano ad erodere la costa…
Risalendo verso la costa Ovest, abbiamo poi fatto una sosta anche nella zona di Newquay, dove considerate le condizioni atmosferiche, tipiche di questo periodo dell’anno, siamo riusciti a catturare qualche altro scatto panoramico..
Da qui ci siamo rimessi in viaggio verso Bath, una nota località termale nella contea del Somerset; questa prende il suo nome dagli antichi bagni romani e le sue terme sono le uniche terme naturali del Regno Unito.
Se volete un consiglio su dove alloggiare a Bath, noi abbiamo prenotato un AirB&B tramite l’Haringtons Hotel di Bath, situato in pieno centro e con una vasca idromassaggio ad uso privato…
Dopo questa piacevolissima esperienza, é giunto il momento di tornare verso Londra, ignari che mesi di lockdown ci attendessero…
